Phoenix the Dragon Art Car, created by Gail and Charlie Holthausen, is a dazzling, fire-breathing mutant vehicle that has become a beloved fixture in the art car community. Originally built in 2014 from an old Nissan pickup and adorned with hundreds of recycled CDs and hand-sewn wings, Phoenix has wowed crowds at events like Burning Man, the Steamboat Springs Fourth of July Parade, and the Telluride Fire Fest. After spending several years on display at the Art Cartopia Museum in Trinidad, Colorado, Phoenix returned to Steamboat Springs for repairs and one final parade appearance before heading to its new permanent home at Art Car World in Douglas, Arizona. The Holthausens’ dedication to their creation and its journey through various communities highlights the enduring appeal and cultural significance of art cars as mobile works of art and community icons.
